In this day and age, scams are very common and constantly happening. This happens often through social media and text messages. Most people would say they have almost gotten scammed if you asked them. Once, I almost fell victim to a scam through a text message. This text message was a phishing scam that said it was from a delivery service. The message from this unknown number said that there was an issue with my package. There was a link that I could easily click on, and the message specifically told me to click it so that I could change my shipping information.
This scam was made and used for the purpose of tricking people into clicking a link and entering personal details. Details it probably would have asked me for include my name, address, or credit card number. This is a way that scammers steal people’s information that is sensitive and get into their accounts on various sites. When I saw the message, I thought it could be real. It seemed to be so urgent through the use of the language. It also looked like it was from a real company.
This scam sometimes works because it makes it seem like something is very urgent and can cause confusion. It made it seem as if I should do something immediately and quickly, otherwise I would not be able to get my package. This being said, there were definitely signs that pointed it to it being fake. First off, the message was from an unknown number. Secondly, the link provided to click on did not match the official website of the delivery company. These are both important details I am glad I noticed.
There are many ways that you and I can decide if a message is a scam or legit. You can check the official website of the delivery company instead of using the link. If you sign in to your tracking details that you received when you placed the order, any messages about the order should be there. You can also take a close look at the sender’s number and information to see if it is recognizable. Another good way to know is to do a search online to see if this has happened to other people. It is important to be careful and take your time when dealing with things like this. Using a minute of your time to verify information can save you a lot of time that would be spent if you fall victim to the scam and have your information leaked.
In general, receiving this scam message taught me that it is very easy to fall for a scam and even easier for scammers to take advantage of people in a simple way. It is always important to be alert, question things that look suspicious, and stay away from sharing personal information unless you know 100% that it is a reliable source. Seeing warning signs can help everyone avoid getting scammed.

Another tip to avoid falling victim to a scam or phishing is to check out the web address. Hackers sometimes use popular names or brands but misspell the word by a letter or two. Also, if the address has a lot of symbols, it could be suspicious. It is also important to look to see what the subdomain might be – eg. ‘net’ instead of ‘com.’ Finally, there are online tools and apps that will test the validity of web addresses.

Thank you for adding these tips! I definitely agree with you. Looking at website addresses is very important, and people should not skip it. Little misspelled words or strange domains are easy to overlook if you don’t look closely. I also like that you mentioned online tools to verify links. That is a good extra layer of protection. I appreciate you strengthening the idea of taking a few extra seconds to double check because it can make big differences when it comes to avoiding scams.

Thank you, Lizbeth! I am glad you found the point about urgency to stand out. I believe it is one of the most common strategies scammers use. It adds pressure so that people do things without thinking, leading them to fall for the scam. I appreciate your kind words!
